Answers
1) Max's father was a very tough man that Iggy respected. In the book Freak the Mighty, Rodman Philbrick states, "'What if Killer Kane hears I was messing with his kid? No thank you'" (Philbrick 70). This shows that Iggy fears Killer Kane because if he escaped prison knowing that he was messing with his kid, Killer Kane would probably do something horribly to Iggy.
2) Max is feeling very scared when he sees that his father has arrived. In the book Freak the Mighty, Rodman Philbrick states, "That's sort of what happens to me when his hand clamps over my mouth. Like I'm paralyzed and my head is empty and all there is in the world is that big hand and this breath like the wind" (Philbrick 100). This shows that Max was so scared that he was frozen in fear because of the surprise of his father. Max is also very dazed. Philbrick states, "That's what I feel like all over - numb and prickly and as light as a balloon. Like my hands might float up in the air if I let them" (Philbrick 101). This shows that he is light headed and kind of dazed by the sight of his father.
3) The tension was very tremendous while Loretta was working to get the ropes off of Max. In the book Freak the Mighty, it Rodman Philbrick states, “Then the beam of that flashlight is hitting me right in the eyes, and she’s tripping over stuff trying to get to me. First thing she does is pull the gag off, and I take a deep, deep breath that makes my lungs burn” (Philbrick 126). This shows that we didn’t know what Max was going to say when she pulled out the gag, but he said nothing, only to take a deep breath burning his lungs. Philbrick also states, “She’s working the rope against the sharp edge of that old boiler and sure enough, it cuts through. Just the one cut won’t do it, though, and she has to do it twice more before my wrist get loose, and I can’t really help much because my hands are all numb and swollen” (Philbrick 126, 127). This shows that we didn’t know what was going to happen when she cut the rope, or maybe even cut Max or herself of the boiler edge. When she’s trying to get it off, she has to keep cutting the rope, and we don’t know how many times she has to do this.
4) Maxwell is a very brave young man. In the book Freak the Mighty, Rodman Philbrick states, “I try to get between them and I’m going, ‘I saw you kill her! I saw you kill Mom! I never forgot, not ever! I know you did it! I know!’ It’s like I’m trapped underwater or something, so weak and floaty I can’t hardly fight him, can’t pry his fingers loose from my mother’s neck. From Loretta’s neck” (Philbrick 128). This shows that Max is very brave by trying to stop his father from killing Loretta by going between them. While doing this, he was brave enough to bring up his mom, and how his father killer her. Philbrick also states, “I can’t look back but I can feel him, feel the icy-cold breath of him on the back of my neck, and the hands reaching blind to grab me and then I’m going up the stairs, just flying. The steps are breaking under my feet and he’s howling in rage behind me, his hands are scrabbling at my ankles and for just a second he has me. I kick loose and then we’re up on the first floor, bursting out of the cellar hole” (Philbrick 132). This shows that Max was brave enough to run from his dad and get both Freak and him to safety. Even though Kenny Kane got ahold of his ankle, he was able to pry it loose to escape.
5) Grim and Gram were still concerned about Max’s safety after his father was arrested. In the book Freak the Mighty, Rodman Philbrick states, “Grim sees me thinking about that one night just before bed, and he sits on the end of the foldout and he says, ‘Things will make a lot more sense when you finish growing up, Maxwell. Now sleep tight and don’t let the bedbugs bite.’ Grim means well, I know that, but sometimes he says the numbest things. Because it’s growing up that worries me” (Philbrick 139, 140). This shows that Grim is very worried for Max because he wants to make sure that he can handle himself, and that he should know all the things to do in an emergency.
