Gwen is one of the main characters in Freak the Mighty. The author, Rodman Philbrick, describes Gwen as a single mom with one kid who's name is Kevin, and she is shield to her son. In addition, Gwen is protective and caring. In the novel, the author reveals that Gwen is protective when he states, "Freak is huffing and puffing as he humps himself up the steps, and the Fair Gwen grabs Freak and puts him in the wagon and I swear, she almost runs home, like if she doesn't get away quick something really bad is going to happen. Freak is in the wagon and he's trying to look back at me, trying to shrug his shoulders and let me know he doesn't understand what got into the Fair Gwen, but I know. It's pretty simple, really. She's scared of me" (Philbrick 20). This shows that Gwen is protective because she does not trust Max with her own son, so she tries to get away from him as quick as possible to avoid any damage to Freak. Furthermore, the author shows that Gwen is caring when the author states, "Gram says, 'She feels bad about how she treated you, Maxwell, dear, and she wants to make it up to you...' It turns out to be not so bad" (Philbrick 24). Because of this, Gwen is caring because she does not want to hurt anyone or offend them. Based on these actions from the character in this novel, Gwen is protective and caring.
