What is Morquio's syndrome? By Elijah Martorana Morquino's Syndrome is a disease that rarely occurs. "The syndrome is estimated to occur in 1 of every 200,000 births." (Medline Plus pg.1) There are two types of this syndrome, type a and type b. Type a, you don't have substance called galactosamine-6-sulfatase. Type b, you don't produce enough enzymes to break down strands of sugar molecules. This is bad because when the sugar builds up, it damages organs. What are the symptoms or Morquio's syndrome? By Elijah Martorana Some of the symptoms to Morquio's Syndrome are: Abnormal Bone Structure (Spine) Round chest with flared bottom ribs Coarse facial features Hyper mobile joints knock-knees Big head for a little body Short stature with a short trunk Big teeth gaps How do you get Morquio's syndrome? By Trenton Veres Morquio syndrome is passed down genetically from parent to child; however, they may not develop the disease. One artical states, "morquio syndrome is an autosomal recessive trait. If both parents carry the defective gene related to this condition, each of their children has a 25% chance of developing the disease" (Causes pg 1). This shows that Morqiuo syndrome is forever in your genetic life, but your offspring may not develop the disease. "The syndrome is estimated to occur in 1 of every 200,000 births" (Causes pg 1). Because of this statistic, it can give the parents hope for their child to not develop this disease. These are the usually signs and chances of getting Morquio syndrome. Is there a cure for Morquio syndrome? By Trenton Veres A cure for Morqiou syndrome has not yet been discovered, but doctors and researchers are working hard with their patients to find a cure for this terrible disease. Discovering a cure for this disease has come so far over the past years. One article states, "Families have raised over $100,000 through Courage Pages and allocated the funds as they wanted" (Courage Pages pg 1). Because of this, researches are able to give the families hope and get a cure out quickly. Doctors have come even closer to a cure though than we have thought. "Researchers are currently testing a possible treatment involving enzyme replacement" (Treatment pg 1). |
